PARAMUS, N.J. - Army got off to a solid start in annual dual match with Navy, winning three of four four-ball matches, Saturday afternoon at Ridgewood Country Club.
The Black Knights hold a 3-1 lead in the Ryder Cup-formatted event. The "Star" will be determined Sunday with seven singles matches, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Marcus Plunkett and Eric Peng, Matt Philie and Harrison Florence and Anthony Kim and John Lee were all victorious while Robby Hill and Brandon Baerwaldt dropped their match on the final hole.
"Yes, I'm pleased," said Army head coach Brian Watts. "We got up early in a few of the matches and were able to finish. Overall, going into singles matches up 3-1 is nice."
Plunkett and Peng, both freshmen, were off first and secured the first point for Army with an impressive 5&4 victory in their first service academy match-up.
Philie, a senior captain and Florence, a junior in his first season with the team, increased the Army lead to 2-0 with a 2&1 victory. The Army duo was 3-up through 12 holes and clinched the match when Harrison made a 20-foot putt.
Kim, a junior and Lee, a freshman, pulled out an exciting match in which Watts figured the two teams combined for 12 birdies. Kim two-putted for par on the final hole to win the match, 1-up.
Navy secured its point when Staton Pruitt and Drew Selby clinched a back-and-forth match on the final hole. Hill and Baerwaldt both missed long birdie putts that would have halved the match.
"We still have a lot of work to do," said Watts. "We have to go out tomorrow and play our hearts out. We have to play it one shot at a time. Every hole is a new competition and we can't get ahead of ourselves. We have to go out and play consistent golf."
