FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Junior Robby Hill fired back-to-back 69s to finish two-under par and lead the Army golf team to a tie for fifth place after two rounds of The Doc Gimmler hosted by St. John’s. The Black Knights are three-over-par as a team heading into Sunday’s final round at the Bethpage Red Course. Yale leads the event at 14 shots under par.
Hill’s first round 69 marked a career low and was the first round of his career under par. He matched that effort in the second round, finishing the first day of competition tied for eighth place. The rounds also matched a season low by any Army player.
Senior Brandon Baerwaldt also played under par, carding a 69 in the first round. He followed that with a 72 and goes into Sunday’s final round tied for 19th place at one-over par. Freshman Justin Pagila shot even par 70 in both rounds, his first two career rounds at par or better, and completed day one tied for 15th.
Sophomores Marcus Plunkett (+6) and Eric Peng (+7) are tied for 50th and 55th, respectively.
Yale is eight shots clear of second place Harvard (-8). Army is tied with Temple, four shots behind Florida Southern for fourth place. The Black Knights are 23 strokes ahead of arch-rival Navy, the only other Patriot League team competing in the event.
The 54-hole tournament concludes on Sunday with a final 18-hole round.
