Army vs. Navy Postgame Quotes (12-2-06)

Army head coach Bobby Ross
"I thought the same thing happened to us today as what’s happened throughout the year. When you’re young at a very important position it hurts you a lot. We’ve had some problems there all season long turning the ball over. You can play conservative enough to try to prevent that from happening, then ultimately if you’re going to win a game, you’ve got to do some things to make that happen as well.

"I thought defensively, we played very well. Our intent was to stop the big play, and I think we did that. I was pleased with that. Defensively, I thought we played well enough to win. I was disappointed in our kicking game. It let us down today. We got a holding penalty on the kickoff return to start the second half and we never established good field position with our kicking game the whole day. We didn’t put the kickoffs deep all day. We were trying to kick it deep and we didn’t do that very well.

"Offensively, we wanted to try to control the ball and keep the ball out of (Navy’s) hands because they’re a very capable offensive unit. At times it worked until we self-destructed midway through the fourth quarter. We were trying to plug away at them, keep moving the ball and get first downs. We didn’t want to put too much of a burden on our quarterback. We didn’t want to ask too much of him. We wanted (him) to go out there and control the ball and try to move it. At times it was successful and at times it wasn’t. When you play a team like Navy right now, you’ve got to go into the game knowing that you need to get three touchdowns out of your offense. We lost a little momentum and then we had the interceptions that really hurt us.

"It’s been a tough year for our football team and through it all I think they played hard and I admire that.

"I thought defensively we played well. (Navy) got some yardage, but at the same time, I think defensively, we got done what we wanted to get done. There were portions of the game where we got done, offensively, what we wanted to get done. I thought we had a chance to win this game right up until the middle of the fourth quarter.

"My personal feeling is that I think our program is getting closer (to Navy). We were playing a lot of freshmen. We have a good (talent) base in our program right now, and we’re very solid defensively. There’s more development to be done offensively. But I think our program right now is pretty good defensively with what we have coming back."

"Mike Viti did a hell of a job (today), and has all year long. We said we were going to try to give him the ball quite a bit today. We wanted him to be a workhorse for us today so we used him quite a bit. We thought we could pound away with him. There were times he was successful and there were times he was not."

"He did a decent job today. I think he’s done a good job (all year). Here’s a young freshman who’s stepped in and played in three games on national television against some pretty good opponents, and hung in there. Everything hasn’t been perfect, but you know it wasn’t with John Elway when he started in Denver, and it wasn’t with Dan Marino when he started. You just can’t expect much. You’ve got to give him the benefit of the doubt. Overall, I’m not displeased with him. He’s shown some promise."

“I think defensively we came out and played pretty well. All of the guys carried out their assignments. I’m proud of our defensive players, they all played a hell of a football game tonight.”

(ref.: not beating Navy during career)
“It’s been really frustrating the last four years not beating them. You put all your time into this game right here, it’s the pinnacle of our season. Now, all we can do as seniors is reflect and guide the younger guys because we’re done. The team will have a great chance to come back next year and change things.”

QB Carson Williams
(ref.: close game giving hope for future)
“Definitely, every time you lose a game like this it gives you even more incentive to win. As bad as losing today feels, we’ve already started talking about working towards making sure we never have to feel this way again.”

“The coaches couldn’t have done a better job preparing us over the past two weeks. Navy gave us the exact same looks that we worked on in practice.”

“I try not to let it get to me. I just go out there and play football.

FB Mike Viti
(ref.: receiving Black Lion award)
“It’s a great honor and it means a lot more than just football. I was proud to represent the team by wearing the patch and even prouder to represent the Hollender family and what the award represents.”

(ref.: being more involved in offensive game plan)
“I think I speak for everyone, when I say its not about me. It’s about doing whatever I can do to help the team win. Coach Ross came to me and said they believe this was what would give us the best chance to win the game. It was just like carrying out any another game plan. The running back might be more glorified, but each person out on the field has their own role that is equally, if not more, important.
