WEST POINT, N.Y. Chris Jacquemain threw for 201 yards and a touchdown, Dennis Kennedy rushed for 73 yards and a score and Igor Iveljic kicked three field goals as Akron beat Army, 22-3, Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Jacquemain completed 14 of 25 throws on the afternoon, including a long completion of 49 yards, as Akron improved to 2-1 overall. Kennedy carried 19 times and scored on a one-yard run.
Iveljic made three field goals of 25, 36 and 37 yards on the afternoon while missing once from 25 yards.
Army was plagued by seven turnovers and fell to 0-3. The Black Knights, playing their third straight home game, had six fumbles and lost four and also threw an interception.
Akron totaled 357 yards of total offense and held a slim 30:13-29:47 advantage in time of possession and beat Army for the second consecutive season.
Army picked up 223 yards as three quarterbacks directed the offense. Chip Bowen completed his lone pass for 11 yards and also rushed for a team-high 65 yards on 21 carries but left the game with an injury. Starting quarterback Carson Williams connected on six of 12 passes for 52 yards with one interception while Carlo Sandiego ran five times during his time under center. Wesley McMahand picked up 45 yards on his lone carry and Collin Mooney rushed 10 times for 36 yards.
Matthew Campbell converted a 36-yard field goal as time expired in the first half for Army’s points.
Joshua McNary paced the Black Knights defense with a pair of tackles for loss and nine tackles while Lowell Garthwaite and Markenson Pierre each registered eight tackles.
Kevin Grant led Akron with 10 tackles while Miguel Graham had a pair of fumble recoveries.
Akron won the toss, elected to receive, and used more than seven minutes off the clock on its opening drive. Iveljic kicked a 25-yard field goal to conclude the possession.
The Zips extended their lead to nine following an Army fumble. Akron took over on its own 21 and needed three plays to go 79 yards. Jacquemain connected with Andre Jones for a 25-yard score with six minutes left in the first half. The extra point was wide left.
Army cut the deficit to six on its final drive of the first half. Following an Akron punt, Army used eight plays to move 28 yards before Campbell split the uprights from 25 yards out as time expired with Akron holding a 9-3 lead.
Iveljic booted his second field goal with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter. Following an Army punt, Akron was at the Army 9-yard line before a tackle for a loss by John Plumstead and pair of incompletions brought out the kicking team. Iveljic was true from 36 yards for a 12-3 advantage.
Following an Army fumble in the final quarter, Kennedy bulled in from a yard out to cap a 24-yard drive.
An interception by Manley Waller led to the final points of the game as Iveljic kicked a 37-yard field goal with four minutes left in the game.
Army will play a road game for the first time this season, Saturday at Texas A&M. Gametime is 12:30 eastern time.
