Army's Carnegie thrives far from Oakland streets

Sept. 13, 2013

Chris Carnegie will line up at cornerback Saturday for Army. He will play against Stanford and then he will return to his demanding, structured life as a student and cadet at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

That's a long way from East Oakland.

Carnegie was not a five-star recruit coming out of high school. Neither he nor his team - 5-19 the past two seasons - will get much time on "College GameDay," at least until their annual, patriotic tussle with Navy on Dec. 14.

But on the brink of Saturday's game against the nation's No. 5 team, a school he followed as a kid, it's worth telling Carnegie's story. He could have taken the wrong path.

Instead, he's playing football for Army.
