Tributes To Felix ?Doc? Blanchard And Joe Steffy Highlight Football Game Day Promotions

WEST POINT, N.Y. The Army Athletic Association announced its game day promotional schedule for the 2009 football season and for the second straight year giveaways are planned for all six of the Black Knights’ home games.

The plan calls for fan giveaways at all six home contests and special halftime presentations at each game, highlighted by tributes to Joe Steffy and Felix “Doc” Blanchard at the Ball State (Sept. 19) and Vanderbilt (Oct. 10) games, respectively.

“We are extremely excited to honor two of the legendary figures in Army football history,” said Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson. “Holding days in their honor is long overdue and we are looking forward to providing proper tributes to their tremendous accomplishments.”

As part of the Joe Steffy and Felix “Doc” Blanchard celebrations, the Army Athletic Association will distribute bobblehead dolls representing both individuals to the first 5,000 fans entering Michie Stadium on their respective days. Steffy’s uniform number 61 and Blanchard’s uniform number 35 will also be retired.

Army will begin its 2009 campaign on Sept. 12 when the Black Knights host Duke at Michie Stadium as part of Hall of Fame weekend, with special events planned for game day. The first 5,000 fans entering Michie Stadium will receive an 8x10-inch  print containing images of the Army Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009. Black Knights Alley will host a pregame photograph and autograph session with induction class members and the class will be honored at halftime with on-field and video board tributes.

“Joe Steffy Day” will be held when Army hosts Ball State on Sept. 19, two weeks before the Black Knights host Tulane on Homecoming (Oct. 3). The first 5,000 fans entering Michie Stadium for the Army-Tulane game on Homecoming will receive an Army football mini-helmet. In addition to honoring Joe Steffy when the Black Knights host Ball State Sept. 19, the Army Athletic Association will entertain its annual Scout Day promotion.

Doc’ Blanchard Day” will be held on Oct. 10 when Army welcomes Vanderbilt to West Point. Blanchard will become the fourth Army player to have his uniform number officially retired by the Army Athletic Association, joining fellow Hesiman Trophy winners Glenn Davis (41) and Pete Dawkins (24), along with Steffy in that select grouping.

The Army Athletic Association will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Black Knights’ Cherry Bowl-winning squad on Friday, Oct. 23 when Army hosts Rutgers. The first 5,000 fans entering Michie Stadium will receive a commemorative team photo of Army’s 1984 club that defeated Michigan State in the school’s first-ever postseason bowl appearance. Selected players returning from that squad will conduct a pregame photograph and autograph session in Black Knights Alley, while all returnees from the team will be honored with on-field and video board tributes at halftime.

Army will close out the home portion of its 2009 campaign against VMI on Nov. 14, hosting Military Appreciation Day at West Point. The first 5,000 fans entering Michie Stadium that day will receive a specially designed, limited edition Black Jack Build-A-Bear, dressed in Army Combat Uniform. The West Point band will produce a specially themed halftime show honoring the military that day, with other tributes to those in uniform planned. The senior members of Army’s football program will also be honored during Senior Day festivities before kickoff that day.
“We understand in these challenging economic times that our fans have choices to make when it comes to entertainment value,” said Anderson. “We feel the game day experience at West Point is unmatched. We hope that these special promotions make our fans’ visits to Michie Stadium even more special.”

Army will hold its annual Black/Gold Game on Friday at 5 p.m. A modified version of Black Knights Alley will be staged inside Gate 3 of Michie Stadium from 3:30-5 p.m., with live music, inflatables and other activities for kids featured. Ellerson will be available for photographs and autographs in Black Knights Alley from 4-4:30 p.m. Additionally, fans purchasing single-game tickets to Army games in Black Knights Alley on Friday will receive a special 10 percent discount on their entire order.
