ARMY POSTGAME NOTES (AT WAKE FOREST, SEPT. 22, 2012)
► The Black Knights’ captains on Saturday were Jarrett Mackey, Justin Allen, Kyler martin and Josh Jackson. Mackey is the team’s “legacy” captain, while the others rotate on a weekly basis. Army will pick permanent captains to join Mackey midway through the season. The legacy captain is chosen by the previous year’s seniors during Army-Navy preparation.
► Army fell to 4-8 all-time against Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons have won the last six games in the series, and have won all five meetings in Winston-Salem.
► The Black Knights have lost seven straight games overall dating back to last season
► Army has lost 10 straight games away from West Point (0-8 road; 0-2 neutral).
► Army is 0-3 for the first time since the 2008 team lost its first four games.
► Senior Malcolm Brown started at running back on Saturday. Brown played running back his first three seasons, but was moved to wide receiver during preseason practice and started the Northern Illinois game. Injuries to regular starter Terry Baggett and backup Jared Hassin, neither of whom made the trip to Winston-Salem, facilitated his return to the backfield.
► Trent Steelman’s 45-yard pass completion to Chevaughn Lawrence in the first quarter was Army’s longest play from scrimmage this season and Army’s longest pass play since a 45-yard Steelman to Malcolm Brown connection at Miami (Ohio) on Oct. 8, 2011.
► Steelman’s first quarter rushing touchdown moved him into sole possession of third place on Army’s career touchdowns responsible for ledger. Steelman has been responsible for 47 scores, including 33 rushing touchdowns and 14 passing scores.
► Steelman’s three touchdowns put him in a fourth-place tie on Army’s career rushing touchdown ledger. He is tied with Carlton Jones (2002-05) with 33 career scores via the rush.
► Raymond Maples topped the 100-yard mark for the third straight game. He is the first Army player to run for at least 100 yards in three straight games to open the season since Akili King in 1993.
► Maples now has eight career 100-yard games, tied for sixth place on Army’s career list (Doug Black).
► Steelman’s third quarter touchdown pass to Maples was Army’s first scoring pass of the season. It was Maples’ first touchdown reception since the 2010 season.
► Larry Dixon reached the 100-yard mark for the second straight game. It is the third straight game Army has had at least two players run for at least 100 yards. The last time the Black Knights had three games with multiple 100-yard rushers was 1990. It is the first time Army has had at least two players with 100 yards in three straight games since 1948.
► Freshmen Chris Carnegie, Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires and Alex Meier made their first career starts at boundary corner, free safety and rover linebacker, respectively. The Black Knights have had six defenders make their first career starts this season.
► Josh Jackson had his 22-game starting streak snapped on Saturday. Jackson made the trip, but did not play because of a groin injury suffered during practice.
► Army dropped its 40th straight game when allowing at least 40 points.
► Joe Drummond and Colin Linkul combined for a sack of Tanner Price in the third quarter. It was Drummond’s first career sack, and increased Linkul’s career total to 3.5.
► Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires made a career-high 15 tackles. It was his first career double-digit game and the most by an Army player this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES
► Stephen Fraser’s 37-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter marked both his career long and Army’s longest kick return of the season.
► Daniel Grochowski kicked his first career field goal, a 21-yarder on the final play of the first half. It was the Black Knights’ first field goal attempt of the season.
► Jon Crucitti returned his first career punt in the third quarter.
