Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. Matt Bell scored a game-high 19 points and Jimmy Sewell and Jarell Brown each netted 10 points apiece to lead the Army men’s basketball team past N.Y. Maritime, 92-42, Monday evening at Christl Arena.

The victory, Army’s sixth in a row, moves the Black Knights’ record to 9-2 on the season. It marks Army’s longest win streak since the 1984-85 season. It is the first time since 1945 that the Black Knights have held three straight opponents to 42 points or less. Coupled with Saturday’s 101-40 defeat of N.Y. Purchase, Army has now recorded the two largest back-to-back wins in school history.

The Black Knights jumped all over N.Y. Purchase (1-7), leading 35-2 at the 9:54 mark of the first half. Bell scored 12 of his 19 points during the game-opening spurt that put the game out of reach.

Army shot a blistering 76.7 percent in the first half and led 58-14 at the intermission. The Black Knights connected on their first eight three-point attempts and hit 8-of-9 during the opening 20 minutes.

Army’s 58 first-half points are the most ever scored by the Black Knights in a first half at Christl Arena. N.Y. Maritime’s 14 first-half points tie the lowest output by an opponent in a first half at Christl Arena.

The Black Knights outscored the Privateers, 34-28, in the second stanza en route to the victory.

Army shot 60.9 percent for the game, hitting 39-of-64 field goals. Bell led the way, as the senior connected on 8-of-9 attempts. The Kokomo, Ind., native moved past Derrick Canada for 20th place on Army’s all-time scoring list. Bell now has 1,087 career points.

The Black Knights had 24 assists and only eight turnovers. They outrebounded the Privateers, 43-31.

Sewell, whose first half blocked shot moved him into sole possession of the Academy’s blocked shots record (65 career blocks), finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

Army returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 21, when the Black Knights travel to South Bend, Ind., for a 7 p.m. game versus nationally-ranked Notre Dame.
