Army Defeats Brown, 62-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Jarell Brown scored 21 points to lead Army past Brown, 62-54, Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. The Black Knights improve to 4-2 on the season, their best six-game start since the 1994-95 squad opened with an identical 4-2 mark.

Matt Bell tallied 11 of his 13 points in the final 7:42 to help Army pull away from Brown (1-5) down the stretch.

Following a Brown rally that tied the game at 41-41, Bell hit a three-pointer and Army scored seven straight points to open up a 48-41 lead with 5:16 remaining. After Brown crept to within three points at 48-45, Bell hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Army a 51-45 lead with 3:19 to play. The Black Knights never saw their lead dip below five points the rest of the way as they hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Army shot 46.7 percent for the game. The Black Knights outrebounded the Bears, 33-18, en route to the win.

With Army leading 10-7, the Black Knights exploded on a 15-7 spurt to open up their largest lead of the half at 25-14 with 3:27 to play. Brown had 10 of his 21 points during the run to help spark the Black Knights.

Army shot 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from the floor in the first stanza. Brown led the way for the Black Knights, as the junior netted 15 of his 21 points on 6 of 8 shooting.

Brown shot 29.2 percent (7 of 24) from the field in the first half. The Bears struggled from behind the three-point arc, hitting just 2 of 11 (.182) three-point attempts. Marcus Becker led Brown in the opening 20 minutes with seven points on 3 of 4 shooting.

Brown ended the first half on a 5-0 run to slice Army’s lead to 25-19 at the break. The Bears continued their surge at the beginning of the second half, eventually tying the game at 35-35 at the 13:00 mark. Army and Brown went back and forth with the final tie of the game coming at 41-41.
Cory Sinning added 10 points for Army, while Chris Walker chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Bell has scored 10 or more points in each of Army’s six games. It marked Brown’s third 20-point game of the season.

Becker led Brown with 21 points, while Keenan Jeppesen had 12 points.

Army returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, when the Black Knights take on VMI at 7 p.m. at Christl Arena.
