Army Takes Down Lehigh, 64-59

WEST POINT, N.Y. Jarell Brown led four Black Knights in double figures with 18 points as the Army men’s basketball team defeated Lehigh, 64-59, in a Patriot League game Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.

Marshall Jackson chipped in a career-high 14 points, nailing a career-best four three-point field goals, while Matt Bell and Cory Sinning each added 11 points apiece.

With the victory, Army (11-7, 1-2 Patriot League) snapped an 11-game Patriot League losing streak, dating back to last season. The win also delivered Army head coach Jim Crews his 325th career coaching victory.

After a 7-0 Lehigh run cut Army's lead to two points, Jackson and Brown sparked a crucial 11-4 spurt that turned a 45-43 advantage at the 7:44 mark into a 56-47 lead with 4:39 to play. Jackson began the run by canning triples on consecutive possessions, while Brown closed the burst with a trey and a two-point jumper.

Lehigh (7-12, 2-1 Patriot League) closed to within three points at 57-54 on the strength of a 7-1 spurt, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to crawl any closer in losing to Army for the first time since Feb. 2, 2002.

The first half of the contest went back and forth over the first 13 minutes. Lehigh opened by scoring the first four points of the game and led 9-5 at the 16:32 mark. A quick 7-0 run by Army gave the Black Knights their first lead of the game at 12-9 at the 14:05 mark. Sinning scored six of Army’s first 12 points on a pair of three-pointers.

With Army leading 19-18 at the 8:29 mark, the Black Knights used a 12-3 run to open up their largest lead of the game (31-21) with 2:40 remaining in the opening stanza. Lehigh closed to within 31-24 at halftime.

Army was able to extend its lead to nine points on three occasions in the second half. The third nine-point cushion came at the 9:46 mark, with the Black Knights leading the Mountain Hawks, 45-36. From there, Lehigh went on a 7-0 run to close to within two points at 45-43.

Corban Bates led Army on the glass with eight rebounds. Army came up with a season-high 17 steals in the game.

Lehigh's Marquis Hall, who connected of 8-of-9 field goals, led all scorers with 21 points. Phil Anderson added 14 points for the Mountain Hawks.

Army returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17, when the Black Knights welcome American to Christl Arena for a 7 p.m. Patriot League contest.
