Diary Entries

Catcher Schuyler Williamson enters his junior season with Army with high expectations. Last season, Williamson enjoyed a “breakout” campaign in which he batted .299 with seven doubles, three triples, five home runs and 28 runs batted in. This season, he is co-captain of the Black Knights and is leading the team from behind the plate. Be sure to check back often as Williamson will share his thoughts about the team's progress and whatever else is on his mind throughout the 2004 season.

I went to Lt. Col. (Craig) Flowers’ office yesterday to handle some business from our spring break trip, and got a chance to talk to a few officers for a little while about our performance during the last week. One thing mentioned really stuck in my head as I left the room, and now applies even more to me after the 2-0 win over Sacred Heart last night. The statement was that we have the talent to beat everybody we play… now all that is left is the leadership and consistency it takes to be successful. I think this statement is extremely relevant to our team this year. We have shown we can beat anyone by beating Florida, yet we still lose to teams we should beat. Our record is 9-8 so far, which is a better start than I have ever had here at the Military Academy, but it is not acceptable. Our team is a lot better this year than it has been the past two years. We have the potential to have a special season, but we continue to play to the level of the teams we compete against. One of my coaches from my previous years of baseball used to say that, “good teams beat the bad teams bad.” We have not yet shown as a team that we can do this. We have shown that we can compete with anyone, but dominate no one.

Leadership will bring the consistency and success we desire. I think that if our minds are focused to the level they were before the Florida game, then we can beat anyone. With that mindset, we will dominate the teams we should dominate, and beat the teams we should beat.

This weekend we have yet another chance to play to our potential. Lehigh is a great team that will challenge us in every aspect of our game. They have been playing very well of late and look to be one of the major forces in the Patriot League this year. We have to show up to the games ready to play this weekend because if we don’t, we will lose. This weekend is the first of many very important conference weekends for us. If we are to accomplish our goals as a team and make it to the NCAAs, then we must be consistent in our level of play. Leadership and consistency are the keys to success for our team. Showing up every day ready to play, with our minds right and ready to dominate, will be the focus for this team the rest of the season.
