Diary Entries

Catcher Schuyler Williamson enters his junior season with Army with high expectations. Last season, Williamson enjoyed a “breakout” campaign in which he batted .299 with seven doubles, three triples, five home runs and 28 runs batted in. This season, he is co-captain of the Black Knights and is leading the team from behind the plate. Be sure to check back often as Williamson will share his thoughts about the team's progress and whatever else is on his mind throughout the 2004 season.

I don't know how to open my next entry other than to say that this weekend was a disappointment. You tell yourself that we are going to get better with every game, but then when things go wrong you don't know how to handle it. The normal thing to do is to go out and try not to make the same mistakes, but when a team takes that approach too hard it starts to press. They start playing timid or in some cases too aggressively. That was the story this past weekend. The more we played, the more we tried to be perfect.

I think we had the lead in the late innings of every game however we still managed to let our opponent come back on us. That can eat at a team more than anything. I have to give Villanova and LaSalle credit. They played us tough, and always gave themselves a chance to win in the end. There is no excuse on our end, though. If we want to be successful, we need to learn to put a team away when we have the lead.

Our Spring Break trip is this next week, and we are all looking forward to getting away from the rigors of every-day academia. The games we play in Florida are extremely important because they prepare us for a tough season of conference play. It is imperative that we come back to West Point confident in every aspect of our game and ready to win. We have to shed the over-timid or over-aggressive tendencies that we are showing now. It is my hope that in Florida everyone will settle down, we will put a few wins under our belt, and the game will slow down naturally. Once the game slows down, I know we will win, and once we start winning consistently we are going to be a tough team to beat.
