OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Army senior right-handed pitcher Chris Rowleyhas been named one of 10 finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Rowley is just the second Army baseball player to be named a finalist for the prestigious award, which annually honors a senior student-athlete with notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Rowley has excelled in all four areas since arriving at West Point. The 2012 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year currently ranks tied for fifth on Army's all-time wins list (21), tied for sixth on the Black Knights' all-time strikeouts ledger (193), and seventh in both all-time winning percentage (.724; 21-8) and innings pitched (237.0). Rowley also ranks as Army's all-time leader with eight career shutouts.
Rowley burst onto the national scene as a junior last year, establishing Academy single-season records for wins (11), winning percentage (.917; 11-1), shutouts (five), consecutive shutouts (four), consecutive scoreless innings (29), consecutive innings without giving up an earned run (29), innings pitched (97.1) and games started (15). He also finished the 2012 campaign ranked seventh in the nation with 11 victories, third in WHIP (0.88), ninth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.92) and 10th with six complete games. He struck out 80 batters and walked only 22 in 97.1 innings pitched over 15 starts. He yielded just 13 extra base hits, and opponents batted .190 against him.
His outstanding junior year earned him three All-America certificates, a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Northeast Region first team and a selection as an ECAC All-Star (second team).
Rowley has not missed a beat this season, posting a 5-3 record to go along with a 2.65 earned run average through nine starts in 2013. He currently ranks second in the Patriot League in earned run average (2.65), wins (five) and strikeouts (52), while listing fourth in starts (nine), fifth in innings pitched (57.2) and 11th in opponents batting average (.276).
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Army fans are encouraged to vote for Chris on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through June 10. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.
Army has produced one Baseball Senior Class Award finalist previously, with Zach Priceearning the honor in 2012. Price went on to collect Senior Class Award All-America honors last spring.
One Army athlete has already taken home the Senior CLASS Award this season with Cheyne Rocha (men's ice hockey) winning the award earlier this month. Brendan Buckley of the Army lacrosse team is also currently a finalist for the honor.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA College World Series in Omaha June 15-26. For more information on all the finalists, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
