Senior catcher J.T. Watkins will take Army baseball fans on a journey throughout the 2012 season through his blog Behind the Plate. Watkins, who is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this year, was an All-Patriot League selection last season. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.
After a successful opening weekend in the Patriot League, it's time to shift our focus to the second weekend. What we accomplished last weekend is certainly something to be proud of. No matter who you beat, winning four games in a row is great to be a part of. But, unfortunately, we don't know which game could be the one to get us into the playoffs, or possibly win us a regular season championship.
Chris Rowley absolutely threw the ball well, and our offense stepped up with great execution, timely hitting, and quality at bats, especially when we needed them the most. Harold Earls did an awesome job at the plate, and made some great plays on defense too. It was also great to see Andrew Johnson step up and play well. He works so hard, and it definitely showed this weekend when he kept the ball in front so well behind the dish. There were so many guys who helped the team win, and it was great to be a part of it. We've got to stay focused and keep our eye on the prize as we move forward.
This week in preparation for the next weekend, the team will be focusing on a lot of similar things we did leading into last weekend. Defense will be a main focus because our opponent this weekend likes to do a few things to speed the defense up. Our job is to throw strikes, slow it down and collect outs. If we keep it simple, we will definitely allow ourselves to be successful.
Hopefully with a good week of hard preparation and a strong focus after putting last weekend behind us, we will come away with another successful weekend.
