Senior catcher J.T. Watkins will take Army baseball fans on a journey throughout the 2012 season through his blog Behind the Plate. Watkins, who is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this year, was an All-Patriot League selection last season. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.
Last week was a great week for the team. We won a few different types of games: we came from behind, we won the low scoring games and we got ahead and stayed ahead. It was really great to see how much we were capable of. Logan Lee pitched a great game on Saturday, and the hitters contributed pretty consistently throughout the weekend. Harvard has a better ballclub than their record may show, and it was good to be able to face off against them.
This week we certainly identified what we needed to work on as a team and on an individual basis in order to be successful leading into the conference season. Doing the little things right and executing in situations that require it is something that we have always prided ourselves on. We didn't play our best ballgame against Columbia on Wednesday, but we came away from it with a better understanding of what we need to do to prepare over the next two days. The team is always hungry to get better, and even though we lost on Wednesday, guys got even more motivated to get things right.
This weekend we start conference along with the rest of the Patriot League. It is always an exciting time of year for us, our families, and guys who have played in years past. This is the time of year where we have an opportunity to continue to play well and make the tournament. If we continue to do what has gotten us to this point, there is no doubt in my mind that we can be successful in accomplishing our goals.
