Senior catcher J.T. Watkins will take Army baseball fans on a journey throughout the 2012 season through his blog Behind the Plate. Watkins, who is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this year, was an All-Patriot League selection last season. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.
We head down to Petersburg, Virginia, this weekend to face George Washington in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Playing two games on Saturday is something our team is used to especially during conference weekends. We played our first doubleheader of the season last weekend against High Point.
The team is definitely ready to get back after it. The pitching staff did a great job against High Point. Guys like Chris Rowley, Alex Robinett, Logan Lee, Nick Dignacco and Gunnar Carroll all pitched well last weekend, and there is more to the staff than those guys. The hard work they put in during the offseason is starting to show already. It was also great to see the work that Alex Jensen has put in pay off by winning Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors.
It was pretty awesome to see all of the support after the games on Saturday as well. Army fans and families put together an awesome dinner and barbecue for the team and those who came out. I don't know what we would do without the support of those people. No matter what, they're always there well before the game starts until the lights turn out. Seeing a friendly face on the road is awesome, and the food was even better.
We're looking forward to this weekend. George Washington is a good club, and I know they're going to come out ready to play. We've learned a lot from last weekend, and have a few things to build on. After making those adjustments and another good week of practice, I know the team will be in a good spot to play down in Virginia.
