WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army baseball team lifts the lid on its 2013 season this weekend (Feb. 15-17) when the Black Knights travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face the UNC Greensboro Spartans in a three-game series.
The Black Knights and Spartans will open the three-game set on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by single games on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
Fans that are unable to make the trip to UNCG Stadium in Greensboro will be able to follow along with live stats for all three games will be available by logging onto UNCG's official athletics website (www.uncgspartans.com). Video streamed broadcasts of each contest will also be offered by UNCG. Twitter updates will also be provided via the official handle of the Black Knights (@Army_Baseball).
Army is coming off arguably the finest season in school history last year, winning a school-record 41 games en route to its fifth NCAA Regional appearance. The Black Knights set 45 Academy records during their 2012 campaign, and they welcome back several key members of last year's ballclub.
The Black Knights, who won the Patriot League regular-season and tournament titles last spring, return 16 letterwinners. Senior RHP Chris Rowley, who set a plethora of Army single-season records and collected a slew of national and regional honors, will anchor the pitching staff, which compiled a 3.25 team ERA last year.
Rowley, who figures to get the start in Friday's series opener, posted a school-record 11 victories a season ago, posting an 11-1 record to go along with a 2.40 earned run average. Sophomore RHP Alex Robinett, who authored a strong freshman season in 2012, will likely start one of the two weekend games. Robinett went 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA last year. Junior RHP Gunnar Carroll, who served as Army's closer last season, may toe the rubber in Sunday's series finale.
Sophomore INF Harold Earls, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year and earned Freshmen All-America plaudits in 2012, will serve as one of the catalysts to the Black Knights' offense again this spring. Sophomore DH Mark McCants, who was named to the All-Patriot League second team last spring, also returns to the fold.
Fellow sophomores Alex Jensen (INF) and Daniel Cortes (OF) round out Army's list of returning starters. Jensen started all 56 games for the Black Knights at shortstop last year, while Cortes was listed with the starting lineup in left field 54 times.
Army, which has won the Patriot League regular-season title four times in the last five seasons and advanced to the NCAAs four times since 2004, will be looking to maintain its championship form in 2013.
UNC Greensboro will be playing this season under first-year head coach Link Jarrett. The Spartans went 25-27 last year and placed ninth in the Southern Conference after posting a 10-20 mark opposite league foes.
Senior C/OF Zach Leach, who batted .315 with eight doubles, four triples, two home runs and 28 RBI in 2012, is one of UNCG's top returning offensive players. The Spartans also bring back senior 1B/C Trevor Edwards, who accounted for 14 homers, 12 doubles and 35 RBI last season.
Senior INF Lloyd Enzor, who ranked tied for the team lead with 39 RBI and tied for second on the club with five round-trippers in 2012, also returns to the fold. Freshman INF/RHP Ryan Clark, who was tabbed the College Sports Madness Preseason SoCon Freshman of the Year, figures to make an immediate impact.
Junior LHP Dylan Hathcock, who authored a 4-4 record and a team-best 3.32 ERA last year, returns to anchor the UNCG pitching staff. Senior LHP Corey Taylor (3-2, 4.27 ERA) is also back in 2013.
Army and UNC Greensboro will be matching up in a three-game series for the third time since the series began in 2007. The Spartans took two of three meetings from the Black Knights during the initial series (March 4-7, 2007), but Army bounced back to win two of the three in 2010 (March 5-7, 2010) to level the all-time series at 3-3.
Following this weekend's series at UNC Greensboro, Army will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to participate in the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Winthrop University. The Black Knights will face Eastern Kentucky, Winthrop and Delaware State during the three-day event, which will be held Feb. 22-24.
