Army senior catcher Andrew Johnson will author a blog entitled "Catcher's Corner" throughout the 2013 season. Johnson, a two-year letter winner, is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this spring. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.
Catcher's Corner - Blog Entry #1
This concludes what we like to call Foley phase. We are ditching the indoor turf (inside Foley Athletic Center) for the green grass in Greensboro, N.C., this weekend. During my freshman season, four short years ago, we traveled to the same ballpark at UNCG. It's all coming full circle for me as I begin my final year with the Black Knights at the familiar field. This will be a bit of homecoming for some of our North Carolina players. We have always had a large crop from the land of the pines. No matter where we travel we always have a strong showing from the ABF.
We welcome a large group of freshmen to the squad this year, but expectations remain the same. Our preparation continues to be modeled to continue to win and do our best to hold true to the traditions of this program. We enjoyed another hard, grueling and fun off-season with our strength and conditioning staff led by Justin Thiel and our athletic trainer Tim Kelly. The hard work of these two men it allows us to put in the work and push ourselves and each other.
You will see many new faces on the diamond this season, but those new faces have been taught what it truly means to be a Black Knight by a lot of the same people engulfed in the dog pile on Doubleday Field last May when we won the Patriot league title. Our expectations remain consistent: win the Patriot League regular season title, win the conference tournament and win at the national level. Will we win more than 41 games this year? Who knows, but you better believe we will play to win every game and won't let anyone get in our way to do so.
With that I want to say thank you in advance to the ABF and all of the fans for the great support I know we will have this year again. Now, it's time to leave the snow behind and head down to North Carolina to play some ball.
Be Big Time,
