FISHKILL, N.Y. - Zach Shank and Mike Orefice each collected two hits to lead Marist to a 6-3 victory over 30th-ranked Army in the seventh annual WRWD Hudson Valley Baseball Classic on Wednesday evening at Dutchess Stadium.

Marist scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the third to take an early 5-0 advantage. The Red Foxes then held off a late Army rally to improve to 16-20 on the season. The Black Knights, who saw their nine-game win streak snapped, fall to 33-10.

Zach Price, Daniel Cortes and Kevin McKague each went 2-for-4 to pace Army's eight-hit attack.

Marist scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage. Shank and Orefice hit consecutive one-out singles and Eric Helmrich drew a walk to load the bases for Nick McQuail, who hit what appeared to be a double play ball to the shortstop. Army's Alex Jensen fielded McQuail's groundball and stepped on second base for one out, but his relay throw to first base sailed high, allowing Shank and Orefice to score.

The Red Foxes tacked on three more runs in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to 5-0. Orefice singled and Helmrich and McQuail drew walks to load the bases. Orefice then scored on Alec Petrone's groundout, and Helmrich scampered home on a passed ball. McQuail, who moved to third base on the passed ball, made it 5-0 when Pat Welsh laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Army got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning as the Black Knights pushed across two runs on three hits to trim Marist's lead to 5-2. Cortes, McKague and J.T. Watkins hit consecutive singles to open the frame, with Watkins' single scoring Cortes from second base. McKague, who moved to third on Watkins' base hit, scored on Cody Murtle's fielder's choice groundout.

The Black Knights manufactured a two-out rally in the seventh inning to creep to within 5-3. Price singled with one out, moved to second base on Cortes' base on balls and scored when McKague lofted a single into shallow right field.

Marist closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth on Jake Berry's two-out RBI single.

Rich Vrana (1-2) was credited with the victory for Marist as the left-hander began the game by tossing two scoreless innings. Jake Rifkin, the Red Foxes' sixth pitcher of the evening, worked around a two-out single in the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season.

Army starter Andrew Flaherty (3-1) was touched for five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks over 2.1 innings and was saddled with his first career loss.

The Black Knights return to action this weekend (April 28-29) when they travel to Worcester, Mass., to face Patriot League rival Holy Cross. The conference rivals will square off in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
