BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
Army's Chris Rowley struck out nine batters over seven scoreless innings to lead the Black Knights to a 1-0 victory in Game One, but Lehigh's Tyler Brong delivered a "walk-off" RBI single in the Mountain Hawks' 4-3 triumph in the nightcap as the Patriot League rivals split a doubleheader on Saturday at Goodman Campus.
Rowley (3-3) scattered six hits and yielded two walks en route to his first shutout of the season, and Patrick Mescher came through with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning to help Army (10-15, 2-4 PL) take the opening game of the four-game series.
Brong paced the Mountain Hawks' 14-hit attack in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored to lead Lehigh (16-13, 3-3 PL) to the come-from-behind victory. LU trailed 3-1 before Brong's two-run homer knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh. He then ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to lift Lehigh to the win.
Rowley outdueled Lehigh starter Colin Gotzon (4-3) in the opening game of Saturday's twinbill. The Mountain Hawks' ace was nearly as good, permitting one run on six hits in a complete-game effort of his own.
Mescher went 2-for-3 to pace Army offensively, while Justin Pacchioli finished 2-for-3 for Lehigh.
Army gave Rowley all the support he would need in the top of the sixth when Alex Jensen was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Mark McCants' groundout and scored on Mescher's base hit to center field.
Lehigh's Nick Cassell did not allow a hit in the nightcap until the sixth inning when Grant Van Orden reached on an infield single. Army struck for three runs on three hits and two Lehigh errors in the frame to build a 3-1 advantage. Jensen's RBI single tied the score, while McCants' two-run triple gave the Black Knights a 3-1 lead.
Lehigh responded in the bottom of the seventh on Brong's two-run shot to left field. The Mountain Hawks then engineered a two-out rally in the 10th to push across the game-winning run. Pacchioli reached on a bunt single, stole second base, took third on a passed ball and scored when Brong singled down the left field line.
Lehigh reliever Thomas O'Malley (1-0) picked up the victory for the Mountain Hawks, allowing just one hit over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Julian Larimer (0-1) was saddled with the loss in the nightcap after permitting Lehigh's 10th-inning rally.
Army and Lehigh wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with another doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m.
Game Notes: Army moves to 73-36 all-time against Lehigh ... the Black Knights posted their first shutout victory of the season in the opening game of today's doubleheader.
