TEANECK, N.J. -
Alex Jensen delivered a two-run single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 4-all tie and help the Army baseball team defeat Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-4, in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Army (9-14) led 4-1 after scoring three runs in the top of the eighth, but FDU (3-18) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to knot the score. The Black Knights then rallied with two runs in the ninth to earn their second straight victory.
Jensen finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Patrick Mescher also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Dakari Cooke drew a walk from FDU reliever Yonah Perline (0-1) with one out in the ninth and moved to second base when Jon Crucitti was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved into scoring position when Grant Van Orden grounded out to second and Jensen singled up the middle to score both Cooke and Crucitti.
Patrick Gardner (1-1) earned his first career victory after pitching the final 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but started a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to finish off the contest.
The Black Knights took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to establish a 4-1 advantage. Crucitti walked with one out and Van Orden singled to left field to put runners on first and second. Both runners moved up a base on a balk and Jensen was intentionally walked to load the bases for Mark McCants, whose RBI groundout gave Army a 2-1 lead. Mescher followed with a two-run single to increase the Black Knights' cushion to 4-1.
Fairleigh Dickinson responded in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring three runs on four hits to draw even at 4-all. The first four Knights recorded singles against Army reliever Julian Larimer, with Ryan McGrath's base hit scoring Riley Moonan with the first run of the inning. Davis Marlar replaced Larimer on the mound for the Black Knights and Dylan Sprague's RBI groundout made it 4-3. The Knights then scored the game-tying run when McGrath scampered home on a wild pitch.
Fairleigh Dickinson opened the scoring in the bottom of the third by pushing across an unearned run.
Army was held off the scoreboard over the first six innings, but the Black Knights manufactured an unearned run in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 1-1. Jensen doubled leading off the inning, advanced to third base on a throwing error by the FDU pitcher and scored when he and McCants executed a double steal.
Moonan went 3-for-5 to lead FDU's seven-hit attack. Eric Anderson, John Giakas and Kyle Weeks added two hits apiece for the Knights, who outhit Army by an 11-8 margin.
Army resumes its Patriot League slate this weekend (April 6-7) when the Black Knights travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to face Lehigh in a four-game series. Doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. each day.
