TAMPA, Fla. - Gunnar Carroll
won his fourth start and Patrick Mescher
hit a grand slam as Army concluded its spring trip to Florida with a 6-4 victory over Harvard, Saturday at Jesuit High School.
Army won two out of three games against the Crimson and finished its journey to Florida with a 7-1 mark.
The B lack Knights improved to 14-6, while Harvard fell to 4-13.
Carroll improved to 4-0, firing eighth innings and allowing just an unearned run. He struck out six and walked just one. Justin French threw the final frame.
Army got on the scoreboard first, scoring in the bottom of the third. With one out, Daniel Cortes walked and Mark McCants was hit by a pitch. Jacob Page bunted for basehit. Mescher then cleared the bases with a grand slam, Army’s first of the season.
Mescher, who singled in the game-winning run on Friday in “walk-off” fashion, has two home runs on the season.
Army added to its lead in the fourth. Connor Love walked and Jon Crucitti reached on a fielders’ choice. Both runners advanced on an errant pick-off attempt. One out later, Mark McCants hit a sacrifice fly to score Love. Jacob Page followed with a single to plate Crucitti for a 6-0 Army advantage.
Harvard scored an unearned run in the top of seventh when Steve Dill grounded out to cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Crimson scored three unearned runs in top of the ninth before French closed out the win.
Army will continue non-conference play with a game Tuesday at Siena. Army will host Columbia Wednesday in its home-opener in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
Army will begin Patriot League play Saturday and Sunday with a pair of doubleheaders against Lehigh. Saturday’s games will begin at noon while Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
