Army 9, UMass 4
TAMPA, Fla. - Army scored four runs in the fourth and seventh innings and beat the University of Massachusetts, 9-4, Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at Tampa Jesuit High School.
Army scored a 4-3 win in "walk-off" fashion in the opener and racked up 12 hits in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader and improve to 9-5.
Jacob Page paced Army with a 4-for-4 showing with two runs scored and a run batted in. Patrick Mescher and Jon Crucitti each knocked in two runs, while Harold Earls had two hits and scored twice. Kris Lindner also had two hits.
Alex Robinett earned his first win of the season for Army. He threw 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked three. Julian Larimer entered in the sixth inning and promptly got a double play to end the inning. He earned his first save by throwing 3.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out five.
Army wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Earls singled and stole second. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Page single for a 1-0 advantage.
UMass posted two runs in the fourth inning when Adam Picard and Nik Campero knocked in runs.
Army took the lead again with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Page and Brock Davidson singled to start the inning. Alex Jensen singled to plate Page. Lindner singled to put runners at second and third. Mescher delivered a sacrifice fly to score Davidson. Crucitti then ripped a double to score two and give Army a 5-2 lead after five innings.
John Jennings helped UMass cut its deficit with a two-run single in the top of the sixth that made it a 5-4 contest.
The Black Knights used another big inning in the seventh. Earls singled to open the inning and Mark McCants was hit by a pitch. Page walked to load the bases. Davidson followed with a sacrifice fly to knock in Earls. McCants scored on a wild pitch and Jensen delivered a run-scoring single to score Page. Lindner singled and Mescher knocked in Jensen with a fielders' choice for the games' final runs.
Army will conclude its season series with UMass Sunday with a single game set for 2:30 p.m. at the New York Yankees Spring Training Complex.
