BRONX, N.Y. The Army men’s cross country team closed a successful season with a fifth place finish in the IC4A Championships held on Saturday in Van Cortlandt Park. Junior Greg Griffith led the Black Knights with a 21st place finish.

Griffith toured the 8K course in 26:17 while the rest of Army’s scoring group finished together in a pack. Sophomore Bryce Livingston and junior Steve Marthy both finished with a time of 26:51 in 52nd and 53rd places, respectively. Freshman Mike Mitchell (53rd, 26:52) finished just one second behind while freshman Barrett Lehardy (56th, 26:54) finished a mere two seconds behind Mitchell. Junior Zac Reiter (121st, 27:53) and freshman Dan Prial (175th, 28:40) rounded out the Army roster.

The race featured 26 teams and 235 competitors.

Prior to the race University race, Army was well represented in the Coaches’ race, taking three of the top ten spots. Sophomore Blaine O’Reilly placed second, just four seconds out of first, in 26:57. Junior Ryan Clay followed O’Reilly to finish third (27:09) while junior Justin Marburger finished eighth in 27:29.

This race closes out a phenomenal 2008 campaign for the Black Knights. The Black Knights accomplished two of their most important goals, beating Navy in the annual dual meet and winning their first Patriot League title since 2001.

Senior Jonathan Anderson, who did not run in the IC4A race, was the team’s standout, placing first overall in both the Navy and Patriot League races. The three-time Patriot League Runner of the Week rounded his season out with an All-Region performance last week in the NCAA Northeast Regionals.

Anderson and his fellow distance runners will return to action in 2009 as the indoor track and field season gets under way with the Crowell Open on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Gillis Field House at West Point.
