BOSTON Senior John Mickowski qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championships on Saturday afternoon with a seventh-place finish in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Franklin Park in Boston. The senior paced the Black Knights to a 12th- place team finish.
The top two teams (Iona and Providence) automatically earn bids into the National Championships and the first four individual runners that are not on one of those teams also earn automatic bids. Mickowski was the second individual finisher in the race that was not from either of the top two squads, guaranteeing himself a berth in the NCAA meet.
“John ran a great race,” said head coach Jerry Quiller. “We knew that he would have to run his best in order to qualify and he came out here and did just that.”
The senior from Mukwonago, Wisconsin toured the 10k course at Franklin Park in a personal best time of 30:07.
Mickowski becomes the first Black Knight to qualify for the National Championships in nine years, dating back to the 1998 season when Scott Goff finished 23rd at the NCAA meet.
Junior Jonathan Anderson was Army's second finisher, clocking a time of 30:52 and finishing in 30th-place while senior Rob Squier came home in 65th (31:27).
Freshman Alexis Torre-Santiago was the fourth Black Knight across the line, finishing in 94th-place (32:02) and junior Justin Messenger was the final scorer for Army, finishing in 109th (32:12).
"I'm really happy with the way the team ran," said Quiller. "I can't believe that we weren't in the top-ten with a performance like that but this region is filled with good runners. Our guys all ran really well."
Sophomore Greg Griffith finished in 127th (32:38) and junior Fitz Taylor finished in 155th (33:04) to round out the Black Knights' performances on the day.
The men’s team finished 21st at last season’s NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, improving nine positions this season to finish 12th.
Most of the team will be in action next weekend at the IC4A Championships in New York City while Mickowski will compete in the National Championships on Monday, November 19, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
