WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior men’s cross country runner Kendall Ward was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday, two days after turning in the best individual performance by a Black Knight since 2008. Ward earned All-Patriot League first-team honors on Saturday at the conference championships to lead the Army men to a fourth place team finish.
Ward completed the 8K course at Lafayette’s Metzgar Field in 25:14.79 to finish fourth of 106 overall. The fourth-place finish was the best by an Army men’s runner since Jonathan Anderson won the individual crown at the 2008 Patriot League Championships. By finishing in the top seven, Ward was named to the All-Patriot League First Team for the first time in his four-year career after earning second-team honors in 2012.
Ward was one of two Black Knights to garner first-team plaudits as classmate Ricardo Galindo, the AAA Athlete of the Week on Oct. 21, crossed the line sixth overall to claim his certificate. In total, four Army runners were named to All-Patriot League teams with senior Joshua Ecker (14th) and sophomore Madison Hill (12th) garnering second-team honors.
Postseason continues for Ward and the Black Knights on Nov. 15 when Army travels to the NCAA Regional Championships. This season’s meet will be contested at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., with teams vying for bids to the NCAA Championships slated for Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. The top two teams from each of the nine regional meets will automatically qualify for the national race, while 13 additional squads will receive at-large invitations into the31-team field.
