WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore cross country runner Lisa Junta and junior golfer Anthony Kim were named the Army Athletic Association Athletes of the Week on Monday following a pair of standout performances last week. Kim won the individual championship and helped Army share the team championship at the Service Academy Classic, while Junta finished third overall at Saturday’s Patriot League Championships.

A junior from Los Angeles, Calif., Kim led Army to a first-place finish at the Service Academy Classic at Trump National in Colts Neck, N.J., for the first time since 1994 when it was played in Dallas.

Kim, tied for the lead after 36 holes, claimed medalist honors with a two-under-par 70. It is Kim’s third career victory and the second time he has won the Service Academy Classic. Kim trailed by as many as four shots on Tuesday before rallying for the victory.

He had academic obligations on Sunday and only played the back nine of the practice round. He drove the first nine holes in a cart but didn’t actually play those first holes until the tournament got underway Monday.

This is Kim’s first career AAA citation and the second for the golf team this season, as Matt Philie earned the honor on Sept. 24.

Junta earned her second AAA Athlete of the Week nod of the season after running to a third-place finish at the conference meet, hosted  by Colgate. The finish, among a field of 72, was the best by Black Knight in the women’s race since 1998 when Gretchen Dobert was runner-up.

The sophomore crossed the line of the 6K course in 22:14.3, edging out the fourth-place finisher by 27 seconds. Junta has earned the Black Knights’ top time in all six races this season, including Saturday’s efforts towards first team All-Patriot League recognition.

This is Junta’s third career AAA honor, having collected the recognition during the 2012 outdoor track season as well.

Kim and the golf team return to competition Nov. 3-4 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C., while cross country has just under two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Northeast Regionals, which are scheduled for Nov. 9, in Madison, Conn.
