WEST POINT, N.Y. – Leading Army to its first Star Meet win since 2008, senior cross country team captain Ricardo Galindo was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday. Galindo won the individual title at the annual Army-Navy cross country dual for the second consecutive year on Friday afternoon at the West Point Golf Course, beating out a field of 24.
Hovering between third and fourth throughout the majority of the race, Galindo kicked it into gear with about 1,500 meters remaining in the 8K course to pull ahead and snap the tape in 24:25.49, more than 11 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher. Led by Galindo, Army finished 1-3-5 to push the Black Knights to a 26-29 victory over the rival Midshipmen.
Galindo became Army’s first two-time Star Meet champion in nearly a decade, as Phil Sakala last claimed a pair of blue ribbons at the Navy meets in 2003 and 2005. The most recent back-to-back Star Meet winner prior to Galindo was Navy’s Andrew Hanko, who did so in 2009 and 2010.
Prior to Galindo’s certificate on Monday, he was also the most recent cross country honoree to be named AAA Athlete of the week. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native earned the honor following last season’s individual crown at Navy on Oct. 27, 2012.
Army will get another look at Navy in two weeks when the Black Knights’ postseason begins at the Patriot League Championships. Lafayette will serve as host of the 2013 conference meet, slated for Nov. 2. Galindo earned All-Patriot League second-team honors a season ago after finishing ninth overall as the Army men placed fourth as a team.
