WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army cross country will compete in the first of two dual meets in 2013 on Friday when the Black Knights travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to race against Cornell. The women’s 5,000-meter race is set for 5 p.m., and will be followed by the men’s 5-mile run at 5:30, both set for Moakley Course at Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
Friday’s date with the Big Red marks the 28th meeting between the women’s teams and 64th between the men’s programs. Army has struggled against its intrastate foe as Cornell leads the women’s series 3-24, including 13 consecutive dual meet victories, while the Black Knight men have lost seven straight races against the Big Red but maintain the all-time lead, 34-29.
The Army women last defeated Cornell in 1997, while the Black Knight men knocked off the Big Red most recently in 2003.
The Black Knights are coming off a solid showing at their first meet of the season, the Army Open, which took place last Friday evening at the West Point Golf Course. The Army women claimed eight of the top-nine finishes, including an individual title by sophomore Madison Hill, while the men captured the top 12 collegiate times, including senior Kendall Ward’s individual victory.
Friday’s meet marks the first of the season for Cornell. The Big Red men listed seventh and the women second in the Northeast, care of the USTFCCCA Preseason Regional Rankings released on Aug. 26. Army last appeared in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings on Oct. 15, 2012, when the men stood 14th, while the women last earned votes in the Sept. 24th poll of last season, claiming the No. 15 spot.
Army will compete in its first large-team competition next weekend at the Iona Meet of Champions. The Black Knight women claimed the team title at the 2012 Iona race, edging out 11 other programs, while the men placed fifth of 14. The 18th annual meet will kick off with the women’s 6K race at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 8K at 10:15 at famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
