WEST POINT, N.Y. - Scholarly honors continued to roll in for recent West Point graduate Tom Wagner as the Black Knight high jumper was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men's Track & Field Team on Thursday.
Wagner becomes the first Black Knight in two years to be voted Academic All-District, as former Army standouts Andrew Ferrara and Annie Taft were named to the 2010 squad. He is one of 11 members of the Division I - District I team.
The Clinton, N.Y., native graduated with a 3.557 grade point average while majoring in physics. He was recently named the Patriot League Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while also earning Academic All-League honors for the fourth consecutive season. Wagner qualified for the NCAA East Regionals for the third time this season, but opted to not travel in order to participate in last weekend's graduation ceremonies.
Wagner graduated as one of the most successful jumpers in Academy history. He became just the second high jumper in Army's 92-year program history to eclipse the bar at seven feet, while graduating with four leaps that rank on the Academy's indoor and outdoor top-10 lists.
Recently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Wagner will now move on to the national ballot and be eligible for Academic All-America honors. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
For Academic All-America, there are four divisional teams, with student-athletes being honored separately in Division I, Division II and Division III. A fourth team - the College Division team - is comprised of NAIA, Canadian and two-year student-athletes.
