WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army track and field will send qualified cadets to the ECAC and IC4A Championships this weekend at Princeton’s Weaver Stadium. The Black Knights will have 18 individuals and three relay teams competing, with events beginning Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.

Recent Academy record-breaker Jessica Waggoner will lead off for Army on Friday night with the discus. At Monday’s special qualifying meet, Waggoner established the West Point record in the event with her toss of 50.74 meters, besting the previous Army beset which stood on the books for 10 years.

The Black Knights are a week removed from the Patriot League Championships where the men finished third and the women placed fourth. Senior Tom Wagner copped Field Athlete of the Meet accolades for the second time in two years after accumulating more points (28) than three schools did as a whole. Wagner won the high jump and triple jump while placing second in the long jump. The senior will be competing in the IC4A’s high jump on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Freshman Lisa Junta put the exclamation point on a successful first season at West Point by being named Rookie of the Meet. Junta won the weekend’s first event, the 10,000-meter run, with the fifth-fastest time in Academy history, followed by a second-place time in the 5,000 meters with the third-best mark in program history. Junta will be competing in the ECAC’s 10,000m on Friday at 8 p.m.

At last season’s ECAC and IC4A Championships, Army placed 40th and seventh, respectively, anchored by then-senior Domonick Sylve’s third career hurdles title.

Army will look to add more names to its growing list of NCAA First Round qualifiers at this weekend’s competition. Three Black Knights rank within the top 48 in the East Region entering the ECAC and IC4A Championships. Wagner owns the 30th-ranked high jump mark and 42nd-best triple jump leap, while Waggoner lists 20th in the discus. Junior Nicholas Snoad rounds out the current qualifiers with his 21st-ranked hammer throw performance. The NCAA First Round is scheduled for May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla.
