WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Kyler Martin was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday after having a career-highlighting weekend at the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Martin became the first in program history to sweep both hurdling distances en route to being named the Track Performer of the Meet.
Martin finished first in all three races he competed in, beginning with Friday’s 110-meter hurdles qualifier. The Vacaville, Calif., native finished atop the preliminary section with a time of 14.23 seconds before winning the title on Saturday afternoon by snapping the tape in 14.28. Martin was one of four Black Knights to score in the event as Army combined for 26 of a 31 possible points.
The senior then followed in the 400-meter hurdles, edging out teammate Chris Smith for first-place honors with the seventh-fastest time in Academy history (52.38). Martin became the third men’s hurdler in Patriot League history to win both the 110 and 400-meter disciplines in the same meet and the first Black Knight to accomplish the feat.
Martin also became the first member of the Army men’s team to be named Track Performer of the Meet since All-American hurdler Domonick Sylve was tabbed in 2009. Martin, who also won the indoor 60-meter hurdles title back in February of this year, is the third track and field athlete to earn AAA Athlete of the Week honors after Nick Snoad (April 1) and Lisa Junta (Feb. 18, March 4).
