WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army track and field will look to return to its winning ways this weekend when it travels to the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championships, Friday and Saturday. Holy Cross will serve as the host for the meet, which will be contended at the Crusaders’ Hart Turf Complex. Events begin Friday with the women’s 10,000-meter run, slated for 9 a.m.

The Black Knights will look to improve upon their respective finishes at the indoor conference meet, where the men placed third and the women tied for fifth. Army last won the men’s outdoor team title in 2009, while the women placed first in 2008.

The Army men were runner-up finishers at the 2011 outdoor meet, earning three individual titles, while the women placed sixth despite capturing first place in four events. Junior high jumper McKenzie Majchrzak is the lone returning champion for the women, while pole vaulter Justin Harris and triple jumper Tom Wagner are back for the men.

The Black Knights enter this weekend’s meet with four of the best marks in the Patriot League this season, as well as 16 that rank in the top three. The Army men own the best finishes in the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays, while Wagner boasts the best high jump mark of the spring (2.12m). Junior Kaitlyn Love leads the conference in the 100-meter hurdles (14.19), while also showing the second-best 400 hurdles time (1:03.26).

Army is coming off a successful three-day stint at the 118th running of the Penn Relays last week. Wagner, Fred Beebe (triple jump), Nick Snoad (hammer throw) and the women’s 4x800 relay unit all recorded marks that rank on the Black Knights’ all-time top-10 lists.

“We feel good about our preparation, we feel good about where we are going into the championship part of the season,” said Army head coach Troy Engle. “We’ve had some awfully good performances in the past couple of weeks. We know the conference championship on the men’s side will be a three-team fight with us, Navy and Bucknell.

“Our women are excited to get back into the top half of the conference after a lack-luster performance at the indoor championships, but with the way we’ve been training and racing, we feel like we’re in a good place; in a good place at the right time, too. The old adage we use is ‘the hay is in the barn.’ We’ve done all the hard work at this point in time, all we’re trying to do is let folks recover enough so all that hard work allows the fitness level to show and to shine.”

The Patriot League Championships mark the first postseason event for the Black Knights, who will travel next to the IC4A and ECAC Championships May 12-13. Through last weekend’s competition, 17 Black Knights have recorded individual qualifying marks as well as four different relay teams.
