CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman pole vault specialist Megan Gemar was named Patriot League Track & Field Rookie of the Week on Monday after claiming the event title in her first outdoor Army-Navy Star Meet on Saturday. Gemar’s first career weekly honor is the second collected by a Black Knight this season.
Gemar won the pole vault against the Midshipmen at Navy’s Ingram Field with a height of 3.72 meters, .03 meters shy of her career best. The mark ranks second all-time on Army’s outdoor pole vault list and is the best by a Black Knight since Kaci Clark (USMA 2011) shattered the Army standard in March of 2011.
Gemar eclipsed the bar at 3.72m on her first attempt as the rest of the field tapped out at no higher than 3.42m. Following her ECAC Championship-qualifying jump at 3.72m, the plebe raised the bar to 3.80, .05 meters higher than Clark’s record, but missed on all three attempts.
Gemar also won the pole vault title in the indoor Star Meet at West Point, marking the first time since 2010 that Army swept the event against the Midshipmen. She joins classmate Haley Winters as Army’s Patriot League Rookie of the Week honorees this season. Winters was recognized Jan. 21.
