Dick Shea Schedule of Events
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army track and field will host its first outdoor meet of the season with the Dick Shea Open this Friday and Saturday. All submitted entries have been accepted for the meet, which begins Friday at noon with the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon.
Unlike previous seasons, events have been scheduled on Friday in addition to the multis. The hammer throw and discus, as well as a trio of distance events will all be contested on the first day of competition. The men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase will lift the lid on running events at 4 p.m., followed immediately by the women’s race. The 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters are also set for Friday evening in order to expedite what has historically been a long day on Saturday.
Saturday’s competition begins at 9 a.m., as the multi events conclude before the weekend’s first relay is contested at 11 a.m., with the men’s 4x100. Field events begin at noon with the women’s javelin, men’s shot put and the women’s long jump. For the entire weekend schedule, see the link above.
With the Navy Star Meet a week from Saturday, Army is expected to rest a number of its key contributors. The Black Knights have solidified nine IC4A Championship qualifiers in five events through two meets this season, including senior Kyler Martin’s pair of invites in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Martin was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week on Monday after winning the 400-hurdles at the Tribe Invitational (March 23) and being the first collegiate finisher in the 110-hurdles.
On the women’s side, junior Jessica Waggoner is the lone ECAC Championship qualifier after punching her ticket in the discus last weekend at William & Mary.
Army won 11 events at last season’s Dick Shea Open, including a 110-hurdles win by Martin and a clean sweep of the multi events by Michael Bliss and Christie Johnson.
Following this weekend’s meet, Army will prepare for the biggest event of the regular season – the annual outdoor Star Meet with Navy. This season’s academy showdown is set for Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, April 6, beginning with the women’s meet at 10 a.m. Navy has swept the three most-recent Star Meets (indoor and outdoor), with the last Army win coming at the 2011 men’s outdoor competition.
