WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Senior Kyler Martin, the reigning 60-meter hurdles conference champion, has opened the outdoor season with a bang, earning Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week honors on the season’s first ballot. Martin shined in Army’s first two outdoor meets of 2013, dominating both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the Shamrock Invite and Tribe Invitational.

Martin ran the seventh-fastest 110-hurdles time in Academy history to lift the lid on the outdoor campaign at the Coastal Carolina-hosted Shamrock Invite on March 16. Martin’s time of 14.31 seconds qualified him for the IC4A Championships, as did his mark of 53.52 in the 400-hurdles.

This past weekend at the William & Mary-hosted Tribe Invitational, the Vacaville, Calif., native was the top collegiate finisher and second overall in the 110-hurdles, crossing the line in 14.46, while his personal-best time of 53.28 in the 400-hurdles bested the field of 20.

Martin is the third Army men’s runner this year to be tabbed Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week and first since senior tri-captain Kevin Russell was recognized on Jan. 14. Sophomore thrower Jacob Drozd was named an honorable mention as well on Monday after recording the seventh-best javelin throw in program history. Drozd’s heave of 62.42 meters exceeded IC4A-qualifying standards in what was his first competition since Jan. 12.
