WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army and Gillis Field House will serve as the hosts for this weekend’s Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships which are set to begin on Friday at noon. The Black Knights are competing for the conference crowns on their home turf for the first time since 2010, which was also the last time an Army team won a trophy, as the Black Knight men earned their league-best 14th title that season.
The pentathlon and heptathlon will commence at noon Friday, while field events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m., Saturday. Preliminary track events get under way at 1 p.m. on Saturday. See below for the full schedule.
“We love the opportunity to host the conference meet,” said Army head coach Troy Engle. “I’m convinced our kids compete better at home. Our kids do very well with routine and thrive in this environment and going on the road takes us out of our zone, so we love to have home meets. To have the Patriot League at West Point is a good thing for us as a team as well as for the Corps of Cadets to be able to see us. We’re excited for it.”
Engle has twice been named the Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year, including at 2010’s title meet.
Last season’s Patriot League Indoor Championships at Bucknell saw the Army men finish third for just the second time in program history and the women in a tie for fifth. The women went without an individual event winner for the first time since 2000, while the men brought home gold medals in the 4x400-meter relay and the high jump, won by Thomas Wagner. The host Bison swept both the men's and women's team crowns.
The Black Knights have been successful throughout the indoor season so far, despite losing an entire weekend of competition to last Friday’s blizzard, causing Army to cancel its plans to travel to the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games. Each Army squad boasts four of the top marks recorded in the Patriot League this season, led by sophomore distance specialist Lisa Junta who has the conference’s best time in the 3,000-meter run as well as the mile. Classmate Katrina Donarski’s Academy record-setting time in the 500-meter dash ranks atop the Patriot League performance list, as does senior McKenzie Majchrzak’s high jump mark.
The Army men have two of the best relay times in the league this season, including the 4x400 and the 4x800. Individually, senior Kyler Martin boasts the quickest 60-meter hurdles time among conference contenders, while freshman Stevyn Spees has the top 500m time.
The Army men have won 14 Patriot League Championships including a string of 10 straight between 1994 and 2003. The Black Knight women have won four team titles all coming consecutively between 1994 and 1997.
Results from this weekend’s competition will be updated frequently on the Black Knights’ schedule of page at www.goARMYsports.com, while Leone Timing, the official scorers of the meet, will also provide results.
