PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Army track and field enjoyed another successful day at the 118th running of the Penn Relays. The Black Knights’ second day at Philadelphia’s Franklin Field was the busiest of their three-day schedule, as nine cadets competed in six different events as well as three relays.

Senior Tom Wagner highlighted the day with his performance in the high jump. Wagner recorded the third-best leap in Army outdoor competition history by eclipsing the bar at 2.12 meters. Wagner, who became just the second cadet in Academy history to eclipse the bar at seven feet during the indoor season, placed second of 21 competitors in the Eastern Division. The height was the best by a Black Knight since 1994.

Sophomore Christopher Smith got Army off to a good start in the day’s first event. Smith placed 25th of 55 in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best finish of 54.08. The time is the best by a Black Knight this season. Senior Taylor Kensy followed in 32nd place with his finish of 54.39.

Army’s 4x400-meter men’s relay also recorded a team-best time. Smith and classmate Matt Green teamed with freshmen Marcus Jackson and Patrick Taylor to finish in 3:16.30 for 27th place of 64 teams.

The Black Knights will conclude their stay at the Penn Relays tomorrow, which features four field events and two relays. Wagner will be joined by classmate Fred Beebe to lead off the day in the triple jump at 9 a.m., followed by two division of the hammer throw. Nick Snoad is slated to compete in the Championship Division at 11 a.m., while Matt Dillon will throw in the College Division at 12:15 p.m. Freshman Jacob Drozd rounds out the throwing events with the College Division javelin at 12:30. The women’s 4x400-meter relay will kick off at 4:10 p.m., while the men’s 4x800m will cap the week at 4:40. For live results, visit ThePennRelays.com.
