Senior Chris Nguyen won a pair of events, and sophomore Zachary Woods claimed the other to lead a contingent of Army divers at the Frank Elm Invitational this past weekend.
Nguyen took gold off the three-meter board (344.60 points) and off the platform (246.40) to set the tone for the Black Knights. Woods, meanwhile, led an Army sweep of the top three positions in the one-meter event, piling up 286.30 markers.
Sophomore Josh Urnezis (271.80) and Nguyen (271.70) finished second and third, respectively, off the one-meter board. Senior Vinny Franchino made it four Black Knights in the finals with his eighth-place showing off the short board (225.60).
Army also swept the top three spots off the platform with Urnezis (241.45) and Woods (233.70) placing second and third, respectively. Franchino racked up 198.65 markers to finish fifth off the platform.
Woods added a sixth-place showing off the three-meter board (293.90).
Junior Breawna Davis led the Army women, finishing third off the platform with a score of 180.70. A total of four Black Knights made the finals in the platform event with junior Danielle Ullman (158.30), sophomore Maggie Churchill (145.70) and senior Michelle Su (75.70) placing fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.
Davis turned in the Black Knights' best score off the one-meter board, piling up 189.20 markers and finishing 16th in the semifinals. Ullman, meanwhile, posted a score of 198.25 en route to a 14th place showing in the semifinals of the three-meter event.
The Army divers will return to action in a couple of weeks when they travel to Providence, R.I., to compete at the Brown Big Bear Open (Nov. 30-Dec. 2).
