WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army junior Josh Urnezis and freshman Ariana Bullard were both honored by the Patriot League weekly awards on Monday, following their performances in the Black Knights’ season opener against Boston University and Vermont (women) on Friday, Oct. 5. The Army men finished with a win over BU (157-139), while the Black Knight women (1-1) collected a win over Vermont (197-103), but fell to Boston University (154-146).
Urnesiz, who swept both diving events against BU, was named the conference’s Male Diver of the Week in the first week’s nominations in 2013-14 season.
The experienced junior diver took gold off both boards during Friday’s meet. Urensiz scored 267.15 points off the 1-meter board and 293.50 off of the 3-meter board.
Bullard, meanwhile, was tabbed the Patriot League’s Female Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her career after sweeping the 100-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medely along with scoring points for the Black Knights in the 200-yard butterfly versus BU and Vermont.
Bullard, competing in her first collegiate meet, finished first in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Bullard won the 100-yard freestyle with a clocking of 56.21 seconds. In addition, the Carmel, Ind., native claimed first-place honors in the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 08.01 seconds. The plebe swimmer also took second in the 200-butterfly.
Army returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11, when the Black Knights host the Alumni Meet at Crandall Pool starting at 4:30 p.m. A week later, on Saturday, Oct. 19, Army closes out its short-lived home stand hosting Massachusetts. The first events are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
