WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army freshman Molly Mucciarone, who had a hand in eclipsing three Academy records and three plebe standards at last weekend's Patriot League Championships, was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday.

Mucciarone, whose outstanding weekend put a fitting bow on what was a tremendous rookie campaign, is the second Army swimmer to be honored as the AAA Athlete of the Week. She joins fellow freshman Natalie Beale, who won the award on Dec. 3.

Mucciarone began her outstanding weekend by helping Army's 200-yard freestyle relay team win gold with an Academy-record clocking of 1 minute, 33 seconds. It marked the Black Knights' first win in any relay at the Patriot League Championships since 2001.

The Cranbury, N.J., native then became the first Army woman since Heidi Borden to win the 50-yard freestyle at the Patriot League Championships, breaking her own Academy record with a time of 23.03. The first-year standout then shattered the school mark in the 100-yard butterfly, placing second overall with a time of 54.88. Both times also represent plebe standards.

She added a sixth-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle, breaking the Army plebe mark and recording the second-fastest time in Academy annals (51.16). Mucciarone also helped Army earn fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Her effort in the pool helped the Black Knight women to their highest point total (542) since racking up 590.5 markers in 2001. They finished fourth in the team standings.
