WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Molly Mucciarone swept the sprint freestyle events and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the Army women's swimming and dving team past LIU Post, 142-137, Saturday evening at Crandall Pool.
Army (4-3) won just seven of the 16 events contested, but the Black Knights' depth helped them outlast the Pioneers (2-1).
"I am proud of our women's team," said Army head coach Mickey Wender. "That was a well-earned victory against a talented LIU Post team. I was really excited about how we swam up and down the lineup, and I'm pleased with the way everyone stepped up."
Mucciarone took gold in the 50 free (23.86) and 100 free (52.10) as Army snapped its three-meet losing skid. The first-year swimmer added a runner-up finish in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 57.46.
Fellow freshman Nat Beale took gold in the 400-yard individual medley with a clocking of 4:36.49. Beale also chipped in a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.66) and a third-place showing in the 100 back (58.58).
Army dominated the longer freestyle events as the Black Knights swept the top three positions in both the 500 free and 1,650 free.
Sophomore Kristen Barta took gold in the 500 free with a clocking of 5:07.90, while freshmen Shannon Rogers and Jennifer Clay finished second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Audrey Brown won the 1,650 free with a time of 18:02.35, while junior Jessica Clay (18:13.89) and freshman Kate Kinley(18:17.30) placed second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Sarah Locke won both diving events unopposed. She scored 165.65 points off the one-meter board and racked up 158.70 markers off the three-meter board.
Army takes next weekend off before returning to action at the Brown Big Bear Open Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Meet Notes: Army had not won since sweeping Boston College, Rowan and Vermont in the season opener on Oct. 5 ... the Black Knights improve to 3-1 all-time versus LIU Post.
