Junior Chris Nguyen won the three-meter diving event, and the Black Knights took three of the top five spots off that board to lead Army at the Galbraith Diving Invitational on Thursday at RU Aquatics Center on the campus of Rutgers University.
Nguyen piled up 322.15 points to take gold off the three-meter board. The Cheshire, Conn., native topped the field, which included divers from Villanova, Boston University and Massachusetts, by nearly 40 markers.
Senior Matt Joiner (263.00) and freshman Josh Urnezis (249.50) placed third and fifth, respectively, as the Army men dominated on the first day of two-day diving competition.
Black Knight freshman Zachary Woods won the platform event, accumulating 201.68 points. Army swept the top four spots off the platform as Urnezis (199.28), senior Evan Walsh (187.21) and junior Vinny Franchino (169.73) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
Sophomore Danielle Ullman led the way for the Army women, taking fourth off the platform with a score of 117.91 points. Ullman was also the Black Knights' highest finisher off the one-meter board, placing 10th in the semifinals with a total of 182.70 points. No Army divers qualified for the finals in the event.
Army's divers will wrap up competition at the Galbraith Invitational on Friday, Nov. 18, with the first events slated to begin at 11 a.m. The Black Knight women will also face C.W. Post in a dual meet on Friday at 6 p.m.
