Delaware Sweeps Dual Meet From Army

NEWARK, Del. - The Army swimming and diving teams were swept by Delaware in a non-conference dual meet Friday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium. The Army men suffered a 171-129 setback to the Blue Hens, while the Black Knight women dropped a 199-98 decision.

Sophomore Joon Chung swept the breaststroke events to pace the Army men (7-3). Delaware won 10 of the 16 events, however, to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Freshman Molly Mucciarone won the 100-yard butterfly and placed runner-up in the 50 free to spark the Black Knight women (5-6). The Blue Hens (8-2) won the first 11 events before swimming exhibition the rest of the way en route to their fifth straight victory.

Chung led the way for the Black Knights on the men's side, taking gold in the 100 breast (58.88 seconds) and 200 breast (2:08.58). Senior Ayman Andrews, meanwhile, excelled in the butterfly races, winning the 100 fly (49.93) and placing runner-up in the 200 fly (1:52.29).

Sophomore Casey Woudenberg won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a clocking of 9:48.30, and the second-year performer chipped in a second-place showing in the 500 free (4:41.28).

The Black Knights also swept the diving events with sophomore Zachary Woods winning off the one-meter board (301.20 points) and senior Chris Nguyen taking gold off the three-meter (307.65). Nguyen added a second-place effort off the one-meter board, racking up 295.60 markers.

Freshman Chris Szekely authored a pair of runner-up finishes in freestyle events, placing second in the 100 free (47.19) and 200 free (1:43.33). Fellow freshman Sam Mo chipped in a pair of second-place finishes as well, earning the silver in the 200 breast (2:09.33) and 200 IM (1:56.95).

Elsewhere, senior Dan Foky placed runner-up in the 50 free (21.85) and junior Daniel Ruckman finished second in the 1,000 free (9:49.80).

Mucciarone, who has emerged as one of the top swimmers in the women's program during a standout plebe season, won the 100 fly in a clocking of 58.14. She also added a runner-up showing in the 50 free, touching the wall in 24.63.

Freshman Natalie Beale chipped in a second-place effort in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.31). Junior Danielle Ullman paced the Army women off the boards, taking second in the three-meter event with a score of 231.00 points.

The Black Knights get back in the competition pool on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Fairfax, Va., to face George Mason and Patriot League rival American. The triangular meet is set to get under way at 1 p.m.

Meet Notes: The Army men fall to 1-1 all-time versus Delaware ... the Black Knight women are now 0-1 all-time versus the Blue Hens.
