Riding a modest two-match win streak, fifth-ranked Army's rifle team travels to Lincoln, Neb., to take on No. 8 Nebraska in a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match at the NU Rifle Range Saturday, Feb. 9, at 8 a.m. CST. It is the regular-season conference finale for both teams, who are tied for third place with identical 3-2 marks.
Army (7-3, 3-2 GARC) and Nebraska (9-5, 3-2 GARC) suffered conference losses to No. 1 West Virginia and No. 3 Kentucky, while posting wins over Ole Miss, North Carolina State and Memphis.
The Black Knights are coming off a 5822-5755 defeat of Navy that marked the Black Knights fourth straight win over the Midshipmen and seventh in the last eight meetings. Juniors Michael Matthews and Richard Calvin garnered medalist honors in smallbore and air rifle, respectively, as Army swept both team disciplines.
It was the second straight meet that Matthews captured medalist honors in smallbore (581) and sixth time this season. Calvin's 591 air rifle score edged teammate Zachary Wells by a point to earn first-place honors for the second time this season. It is the third straight meet that Calvin has scored in the 590 range and sixth time this season. Wells' 590 tied his career high that he set last year.
In the four-man NCAA format scoring, Army posted its second-highest air rifle mark (2352) of the season and third best in the combined scoring (4663).
The Black Knights' top marks of the season are a 2357 in air rifle that tied the school record, a 2319 in smallbore and 4675 in the combined scoring
Nebraska is coming off a first-place finish (4639) at the Withrow Open after outpointing a 13-team field hosted by Murray State. The Huskers' highest combined score of the season is a 4661 along with a 2307 mark in smallbore and a 2352 showing in air rifle.
It will be a close meet judging by each team's best performances as Army's top score in air rifle is just five points ahead of Nebraska's with 12 points the margin of difference in smallbore.
