The Army rifle team hosts its first home match of 2013 when it welcomes Ohio State to Tronsrure Marksmanship Center Saturday at 9 a.m. The Black Knights posted a pair of season highs in sweeping a triangular hosted by The Citadel last Saturday.
Junior Michael Matthews wrote the headlines medaling in both disciplines, and Army set season highs in air rifle (2351) and the team composite (4664) posting wins over North Carolina State (4584) and The Citadel (4460).
Matthews fired a 584 in smallbore and equaled his career-high in air rifle with a 592 (for an 1176 composite) as Army outpointed the field in both disciplines. The Black Knights recorded a 2313 smallbore score, which is just six points off its season best, as Matthews led a sweep of the top six places. Army claimed the top four spots in air rifle authoring a season-high 2351, which is just six points shy of the school record (2357) set in 2007.
Junior Joseph Todaro was runner-up in smallbore (579) and classmate Richard Calvin was second in air rifle (591) as Army opened the winter portion of its schedule with a pair of wins in improving to 4-2.
The Black Knights moved up a spot in the latest national rankings to head into the meet No. 5 with the Buckeyes listed No. 15. Saturday's match is the first of five home meets scheduled during the winter to include hosting the Army-Navy match on Feb. 2.
Ohio State is coming off a solid performance at the 7th Annual Camp Perry Open Air Rifle Competition last weekend as part of a field of 170 competitors from all over the country. Junior Amanda Luoma fired scores of 588 on both match days and placed third overall in the competition behind US National Team member Elizabeth Gratz (Illinois) and Hank Gray (US Army Marksmanship Unit). Sophomore Greg Hagar fired scores of 582 to place seventh overall and third in the junior division (age-20 and under).
