LEXTINGTON, Ky. -
Richard Calvin earned medalist honors in air rifle and Michael Matthews was second in both disciplines leading Army's rifle team to a 4650-4620 decision over Murray State Saturday afternoon in a match held at the University of Kentucky's Barker Hall.
The win is the second straight for the Black Knights (2-1) who swept both disciplines for the first time this season as Army outpointed Murray State in smallbore, 2319-2291, and edged the Racers in air rifle, 2331-2329.
Calvin recorded a season-high 590 air rifle score to edge Matthews for medalist honors by a point. Murray State swept the next four spots as both teams placed five shooters among the top ten. William Mengon (578) and Zachary Wells (574) joined Calvin and Matthews on Army's counting team.
Matthews and Mengon tied for second-place honors in smallbore with identical 583s to trail Murray State's Bill Harvey's winning mark (584) by a point. The Black Knights swept the next five places in dominating that event for the second straight week. Mengon's 583 score is a season high and just three shy of his career mark. Jacob Costa (577) and Joseph Todaro (576, season high) rounded out Army's four-man unit that outscored the Racers by 28 points.
No. 4-ranked Army (1-1 GARC) faces a stern test Sunday taking on No. 3 Kentucky in a GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) match at Barker Hall. The Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 GARC) defeated No. 10 Murray State 4676 -4605 in their first home match of the season yesterday firing a 2324 smallbore and 2328 air rifle in sweeping both events.
The Black Knights will be looking to post their first win over Kentucky since taking a 4671-4632 decision in 2007-08 when they posted a 10-1 overall mark along with going undefeated in the GARC (6-0) to capture the regular-season title.
There will be live stats at the meet and fans can follow the scoring by logging onto Army's official athletics website and navigating to the rifle schedule page.
