WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Michael Matthews earned medalist honors in both events, to include a career-high 592 in air rifle, leading Army to a 4658-4631 victory over GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) rival Memphis Monday afternoon at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.

The win is Army's first of the season as the Black Knights leveled their overall and GARC mark at 1-1 following their 10th straight win over the Tigers.

Matthews fired a 583 leading an Army sweep of the top three places in smallbore. Joseph Todaro was two points behind with a season-best 581 and Jacob Costa tied his career-high firing a 579.

Overall, Army claimed six of the top seven spots with Zachary Wells chipping in with a personal best 578, team captain William Mengon posted a 575 and Richard Calvin recorded a 574. Alex Rivera, who finished among the top 10, set a career high 573.

Matthews, Todaro, Costa and Mengon rounded out Army's four-man smallbore counting unit that combined for a season-high 2318 in outpointing Memphis (2288) by 30 points.

Matthews' 592 in air rifle eclipsed the 590 mark for the first time in his career as he bested his previous high by three points en route to edging Memphis' Daniel Hermsmeier (590) for medalist honors. Army's next two shooters also set career highs as the Black Knights claimed three of the top five spots with Mengon placing third (589) and Costa finishing fifth (585).

Memphis however edged Army in the four-man team scoring by three points (2343-2340), but the Black Knights domination in smallbore lifted them to a 27-point decision for a season-high 4658 in the combined scoring.

Matthews, Calvin (583), Wells (583) and freshman Alyssa Gestl (582) rounded out Army's four-man air rifle scoring unit. It is the second straight meet that Gestl has been a member of that firing unit, and her score bettered her previous high of 579 by three points.

The meet was the final home match of the fall season as Army heads to Lexington, Ky., to take on Murray State on Saturday, Oct. 20, and the Wildcats on Sunday, Oct. 21.
