The Army rifle team lifted the lid on 2013-14 with a 4640-4597 win at the University of Mississippi on Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. Both teams took part in a Shoot Pink initiative, donning pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.
The Black Knights won their season-opener for a first time since 2011-12 and extended their win streak to three matches over Ole Miss. Army opened the day with a team score of 2304 in smallbore and finished the afternoon with a 2336 in air rifle to seal the victory and open Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) competition with a 1-0 mark.
Army, which finished fourth in last year's GARC championships, bested the Running Rebels in both disciplines and grabbed the top three finishes in air rifle and smallbore on the day. The Black Knights were picked fourth in last month's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA). Ole Miss finished fifth at the 2012-13 GARC Championships and was picked 14th in the preseason poll.
Senior All-American Michael Matthews opened the day with match-best 584 in air small bore, which included scores of 195 kneeling, 200 prone and 189 in the standing position. Junior Alyssa Gestl, who joined Matthews on the Black Knights' five-man unit that competed at the NCAAs last season, finished a close second with a 580. Senior All-American Joseph Todaro rounded out Army's top-three smallbore finishes, turning in a 579, which included a team-best 190 in the standing position.
The Black Knights continued to hold court in air rifle, as Gestl capped a stellar season-opening effort as she tied teammate Zachary Wells with a score of 585. Gestl's combined 1165 score topped all shooters on the afternoon. Senior Richard Calvin, who earned an All-America certificate in air rifle a year ago, posted a 584 to finished in a three-way tie for third place. Todaro and Ole Miss' Rena Goodwin matched Calvin's 584.
