Rifle Sweeps Triangular In NCAA Qualifier

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior co-captain Joseph Todaro was the top scorer in smallbore and sophomore Olivia Nardone set a career-best beating the field in air rifle as seventh-ranked Army swept a triangular in its NCAA Qualifier Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.

The Black Knights (7-5) recorded a 4657 in outpointing SUNY-Maritime (4243) and USP (3879) on Senior Day for Todaro, Michael Matthews, Richard Calvin and Zachary Wells.

Todaro led an Army sweep of the top 10 places in smallbore with a 583 as he edged classmate Matthews by a point to earn first-place honors for the third time this season.

Sophomore Alyssa Gestl was third (579) and Calvin finished sixth (566) in rounding out Army's firing unit that combined for a 2310.

Freshmen Elizabeth Mostert was fourth (570) and Danielle Cuomo (567) placed fifth firing individually in rounding out Army's top five shooters in smallbore.

Nardone shattered her career mark in air rifle by five points recording a 592 in outdistancing the field. Calvin was runner-up with a 586 after besting Cuomo and Gestl, who fired 585s, for that spot by a point. Matthews and freshman Allen Solida tied for fifth place behind 584s in rounding out Army's top shooters.

Nardone, Calvin, Gestl and Matthews comprised Army's four-man firing team that combined for a 2347 as the Black Knights dominated both disciplines in closing out a solid performance in the Black Knights' bid to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the 11th straight year.

Next up for Army is the GARC Championships in Oxford, Miss., next weekend.
